Decided to do two pictures today. I guess I’m loving myself, and the wayward single white hair sticking out. :-(

A little later in the morning, at the office.

2nd day of the Pic-A-Day project. Poeple might be thinking I’ve lost it, but I’m determined to see this through.

Multiple Personality Personality

[The title is not a mistake]

Quoting from the wikipedia page on Multiple Personality Syndrome:

“Dissociative identity disorder (DID), as defined by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR), is a mental illness whereby a single individual evidences multiple distinct identities or personalities, each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment.[1] The diagnosis requires that at least two personalities routinely take control of the individual’s behavior with an associated memory loss that goes beyond normal forgetfulness, and symptoms are not due to substance abuse or medical condition. Earlier versions of the DSM named the condition multiple personality disorder (MPD), which is still used by the ICD-10.”

In my opinion, the only thing that separates an “intelligent personality” from a “personality disorder” is the line above in bold, i.e. “an associated memory loss that goes beyond normal forgetfulness”.

I believe, to be successful, it is important to be able to adapt your personality on the fly, depending on the person you’re talking to and the situation you’re in. When I was quite young I met a delegate in a Jaycees conference, and was quite impressed by his rapid switching personality which altered every time he talked to a different person. Somewhere inside my head I decided to become like that, in time.

Today, I received an email from someone who is getting to know me virtually through my blogs, and media clips on youtube. I quote:

“going thru your blog one thing becomes pretty evident and that is you have a very different taste in music…which makes me wonder if you have an entirely different range of likes and dislikes in other things as well…! Also, you sound entirely different when u talk in urdu and a whole different personality comes across when u speak english…which makes me think that perhaps you have a double personality or a multiple personality or something of that nature!”

I take this email as a great compliment.

Personality

If you want to be remembered, or to make your mark in this briefly long life, your only tool is your personality; the expression of your personality. That little twinkle that is unique to you; that sets you apart from everyone else… before and after you. It is your personality that will carve the world around you. It is the expression of your personality, you will be remembered for.

Faisal Qureshi - Daily Photo Project. 2008 01 23, originally uploaded by Faisal Qureshi.

Many years ago, during the early days of WWW, I came across a young girl’s website, where she’d post a picture of herself every day. Over a couple of years, one could see her moods, her life, and her changing. It was a most amazing window into her life.

I had always wanted to take on a similar project, but life’s pre-occupations prevented me. Yes. I’m a narcissist, like everyone else. Only difference is, I admit it ;-)

To develop a similar stream is also on my agenda for 2008. So help me God.

Feel free to comment on the pictures

P@SHA Startup Insider’s Session

No matter how hard I try to stay away from switching into Loose Ends mode, it’s only a matter of time when Professor Qureshi just kicks in. The P@SHA entrepreneurs guidance session last week was another such incidence.

New Year’s Resolution

Like every year, 2008 has also started with some resolutions, hopes, and aspirations. With every year, as I grow older, I feel I’ve also grown wiser; only to find out a year later that it wasn’t so. I guess it’s a learning process, and will go on till I breathe my last.

Writing this blog is one such resolution. I have started many blogs before this, but they’ve all died down in my quest to try new technologies, and just generally being inconsistent. But something in my old bones tells me this one’s going to stick.

As my wife, Reema, says there’s a time to take and there’s a time to give; I think time has come for me to give back to my people, to Pakistan.

So help me God.
