"What man is a man that doesn't change for the better the world he lives in?"

Why did I quit Dawn

I have received an overwhelming number of queries and complaints about my absence from Breakfast At Dawn. Yes. It is confirmed that I have ended my career at Dawn News for the time being. Why? Long story. But the short of it is that I’m not a media person. I had set out, with my friends Umar, Tania, and my wife Reema, to change the country; to make a difference. In that effort we had started a social awareness (not reform) TV show called Loose Ends. By the grace of God, the TV show got more popular than we had ever imagined, and in spite of great opposition, stayed on air for 44 weeks. Before the TV show was finally “shut down“, it transformed into a Social Awareness Movement by the name of Loose Ends Pakistan.

Shortly after the end of the show, my buddy Umar (who had created Loose Ends) decided to sell shop in Karachi and move to the United Kingdom. His departure sort of broke the chain, and things slowed down.

Dawn TV made me an offer to do their breakfast show, and it seemed like the thing to do. I spent almost a year with Dawn News, working on the breakfast show, and it was the most educational, professional, and enlightening experience. Dawn, no doubt is one of the very best news channels in Pakistan; and the breakfast show gave me 2.5 hours of live transmission, 5 days week. In short, it was an unmatched experience. BUT, it was nothing like Loose Ends, which I had originally set out to do.

My websites, blogs, profiles, have repeatedly quoted:

What man is a man who does not make the world better? (From the Latin Inscription: Nemo vir est qui mundum non reddat meliorem)

When going through life you should always stop to ask whether you’re a taker or a giver. My answer to myself was, I want to be a giver, but I had of late become a taker. Cleaning up my archives, I came across the following clip and I realized that I had lost focus and was drifting away from my calling in life. Thus the sudden departure from Dawn, in the hope that I will be start something like Loose Ends again, very soon.

Right now, I’m in the process of looking for possibilities and opportunities, where I can start a TV show that made the same difference in the lives of Pakistanis as did Loose Ends. So help me God.

Commendable decision Faisal! Wishing you all the best. I really hope you’re able to achieve and sustain your aims.

  • I think its a great move….. wish you all the best

  • That was the first time I actually saw a clip of Loose Ends…. I hope one of these days you will revive it somewhere – somehow.

Sir ji, i told you & everyone else, “TYING LOOSEends” was a bad idea. Some Ends in Life are meant to be left LOOSE & I am proud to be a part of LOOSEends Pakistan. Its Ends may seem to be LOOSE, but it surely has kept us Tied and it is all because of You, Thank You!

  • looseends was looseends , nothing is comparable to it. I like what Saif has to say and yes do what your conscience tells you.

  • FQ All the best!! :-)

    Hoping to see you soon…

  • It’s always inspiring to see a person who followed their calling – irrational as it sounds. But what’s so rational about life anyway?

Good luck to you – it’s the first time I’ve learned the story behind the enthusiastic host of the Breakfast Show. Azhar Abbas has the talent of pulling together genuine people and investing time and attention in them.

But TV has its limitations that the heart knows not! So good luck with treading the unsure path; all your work and experience so far will take you to where your destiny is.

  • to follow your heart thats what life should be about…good on you mate!

there was a song in jungle book…bare neccessities…i feel like quoting it here but a) i dont remember it accuretly and b) my eyes r hurting but u google it and u will know wht i mean.

all the best to u and reema!

  • hey FQ, very sad to read that you Quit. I always traced Dawn as learning tool and you as speaking newspaper, because of your english. Although, you should have continued for some changes masked by another name but with the motto of loose ends.

Idea: start podcasting if you cant afford (a tool ) to video blog.

    Do write me back !

  • [...] Wonder how many of you have noticed that Faisal Qureshi has been missing from Breakfast at Dawn all this week ?  Those who were used to waking up to the banter of Ayeshah Alam and Faisal Qureshi at 7 every morning, have found that Faisal has vanished. Well,  it is official – FQ has left Dawn News. Why? I will let him tell you. [...]

I wont say much about Breakfast At Dawn but must say its really sad that a show like “Loose Ends” had to end, I dont think Ive ever seen a more sensible program on PK TV. Its really about time such topics are discussed!! .I think its simply amazing what you have done and are doing for Pakistan, (specially your “Pappo yar…” project), if we had a few more people like you and your friends, Pakistan would certainly be a much better place to live.
I wish you all the best and hope your new program will be as influential as “Loose Ends” was. Looking forward to see it.

  • It was my appearance on the Looseends show in 2006 that started a chain of events which have led to the creation of http://www.autismpakistan.org, for that I thank Faisal Qureshi, a visionary whose name will be remembered in history. Pakistan needs more people like him.
Autism is growing in the world, and is affecting every country in the world. For a country like ours where there is inadequate awareness, TV shows continue to make a massive impact.
